冬タイヤに少しオーバーサイズを履かせたいと思い、事前にハンドルを左右いっぱいに切った状態でタイヤとタイヤハウスのクリアランスを確認してたところ、右前ショックアブソーバーからのオイル噴出を発見、ガーン！となりました。
夏タイヤが坊主に近くなってきたため、早めの10月下旬に冬タイヤに交換した時点ではショックはじめタイヤハウス内は異常なかったので、その後、一度凸凹の雪道を走った時に発症してしまったのでしょう。
この時期から車をいじるのは、正直本当に避けたところです。
タイヤハウス内側にオイルが噴いた痕跡があり既に手遅れだとは思いましたが、これ以上の足回りのゴムブッシュ類やブレーキホースへのオイルの付着を軽減するため、応急手当として古靴下をねじりっこで巻き付けておきました。
このままでは長く乗ることはできませんので、すぐにパーツ手配に取り掛かります。
車は 2010年 BMW X1 xDrive25i ABA-VL25 E84 です。
これまでこの車のトラブルで取り寄せたパーツは、バッテリー、イグニションコイル、プラグ、ブレーキのディスクローター・パッド、キャリパーのピストンシール・ピストンブーツ、エンジンマウント、ミッションマウントなど多岐にわたりましたが、全てAmazonかYahooショッピングで調達できました。
ところが今回、一種の消耗品でもあるはずのショックアブソーバーが、この両ショップや楽天を含めどうしても見当たりません。
やむなく広範囲に探しますが、いくつか見つかったのはEU圏内のショップで、アメリカのショップはないに等しい感じです。
その中でも検索上位かつ信頼できそうなショップを探し、UKの「spareto」に注文しました。
右がダメになったということは左も間もなくだろうし、送料の関係もあるので左右同時に注文します。
一瞬、リアもいこうかなと思いましたが、フロントが無事届いてからにしようと思いとどまりました。
国内のショップのようなレビュー件数とか評価のようなものは一切見当たらず、何となく不安、支払のカードも初めてのショップなので用心し、わざわざカード会社に付帯してきたプリペイドカードにチャージして決済に臨みました。
11/29（月）23時頃にポチりましたが、11/30（火）翌朝よく見直してみると配送先住所が一部抜けていることに気づき同日昼休みに連絡、同日16時には配送先修正の連絡があり、同日20時にはDHL Expressより発送の連絡。
UKのショップに注文した気分でしたが、DHLの追跡では発送国はエストニア、その後ポーランド～ドイツ経由で日本に到着、12/3（金）に配達されるという驚愕のスピードでした。
部品単体では1本約40ユーロ×左右、日本の消費税に当たる付加価値税20%＋送料で約75ユーロ、合計約155ユーロ、約20,000円でした。さすがに送料が高めですがやむなしです。
純正部品ではなくMEYLE製、これまで買ったブレーキのディスクローター・パッド、エンジンマウント、ミッションマウントも同社製だったので特に抵抗はありませんでした。
交換作業に先立ち、スプリングコンプレッサーを別途Yahooショッピングより購入、税・送料込み1,550円でした。
ショックをあまり動かさないように気を付けながら単身先まで一往復、帰ってきて作業開始です。
まずはエンジンヘッドへのアクセスのため大量の部品を外します。これが毎回々々非常に面倒です。これまでの脱着回数は軽く10回を超えています。
ストラットタワーバーのストラット側E14のボルト(黄矢印)を外し、フロントガラス下中央のストラットタワーバー根元側のキャップを外しE18のネジを緩めて、ストラットタワーバーを少しずらします。
E14はそうでもないですが、E18は固く締まっており、かつ、力を入れにくい位置にあるので、遠心クラッチタイプのインパクトレンチで1～2回インパクトを与えて緩めました。
ショックの軸のトップを留めてるセルフロックカラーナットを緩めます。
ストラットを取り外して単体になってからでは緩めにくくなるかも知れないので、車体に固定され力を加えやすい状態のうちに緩められることを確認しておきます。
ショックの軸の六角ボルトの穴は6mm、セルフロックカラーナットは21mmでした。
21mmのロングソケットの芯穴に六角レンチを通し、供回りを防止しながら回す必要があります。
このナットは一度外すと緩み止めが効かなくなるかも知れませんが、今回購入のショックには新しいナットが付いてきました。ただし、サイズは19mmです。
今回の19mmと21mmのロングソケットは、以前購入のトルクレンチの付属品がそのまま使えました。
次にサポートベアリングの皿から出ている三本のボルトを、ボンネット内から留めてる13mmのナットも緩めます。
これはには大きなトルクは必要ないですが、後の作業のため指で緩められるようにしておきます。
このナットは、一度外すと緩み止めが効かなくなり再使用禁止となってるので注意が必要です。
スタビライザーとショックを連結する16mmのナットを外します。
上の写真はショック交換後の写真です。交換前はオイルや泥でギドギド過ぎてわかりやすい写真が撮れませんでした。
裏側にも16mmの供回り防止が必要ですが、17mmのスパナで代用できました。
ショックの下端を締め付けている18㎜のボルトとナットを外します。
ここもかなり強く締まっているので、遠心クラッチタイプのインパクトレンチで1～2回インパクトを与えて緩めました。
16mmと18mmのサイズはソケットを各一つ買っただけで、他にスパナもメガネも持ってないので、供回り止めには大きめモンキーを使いました。
写真は分かりやすいように、ショックを外した後の状態で、ナットも外し済みです。
本来、このナットを外しただけでボルトも抜ける作りに見えますが、今回の作業では長時間叩いたり、CRCを吹いたり回したりしても結局抜くことができませんでした。
錆びの世界は通り抜けたと思いますが、なぜなのかは不明です。
まあ、ボルトが抜けなくてもショックが抜けるぐらい締め付けが緩めばいいだけです。
一部の諸先輩方の記事では、このボルトを緩めるだけでショックが抜けるように書いてあるのも見かけます。
他にはタガネやマイナスドライバーを隙間に打ち込んで広げて、ショックを抜いている記事も見かけます。
でも、実際やってみましたが緩む気配も感じられません。
やっぱり広げないとダメなんですね。
しかし、タガネが入るスペースもないし、さらに、それを叩けるスペースなどあるはずもなく。
この作業について下調べしたときに、ラチェットレンチの先に付けて広げられる工具があるとぼんやり記憶してました。
なので、工具で困ったときは自転車で最寄りのジョイフルエーケーに買いに行く覚悟でした。
ところが今一度ググると、その工具「スプレッダービットソケット」とは「欧州車用ストラットユニット脱着専用工具」とのこと。
何と！それってカー用品です。
最寄りのジョイフルエーケーはカー用品に弱いのであるはずない、というか、カー用品専門店でもあるわけないか。
ん～、困った。価格としては安いものですが、専用工具を注文して作業を延期するとなると、今日は12月10日、次に帰ってこれるのは正月休みの12月29日になります。
今はまだ雪がありませんが、その頃は雪が積もっているはず。作業がやりにくいうえに、これ以上寒いのはきつい。
要するに隙間に何か突っ込んで捻って広げればいいのだろう、何とかならないかと工具箱をガラガラやってると、六角レンチを削って似たようなものを作ってはどうかと思いつきました。
早速手持ちの六角レンチをを確認すると8mmがあります。
これを、隙間に入るくらいに削ってひねれば隙間をこじ開けられるということで、早速やってみることに。
この専用工具の寸法は8.2×5.5mmとあるので、見つかった8mm六角レンチの平面を1mmちょとづつ削れば近い寸法になるはず。
角～角は約9mmあるのでちょうどよいかと。
メーカーによってはもっと楕円のものも販売されています。
隙間に入るまで削っていったらこんな感じになりました。
隙間に入れてこじると、お～確かに広がりました。
これは成功！かと思いきや、ショックはなかなか抜けてくれません。
どうやらクリアランスが極めて僅かで、引っ張る角度が少しでも斜めになっただけで、金属どうしが噛んで動かなくなってるようです。
本当はもう少し下に自作スプレッダーをかませたいのですが、抜けないボルトが邪魔で、なかなか思った位置に入れられないのも原因かも知れません。
下からパンダジャッキを入れ、何度も上下させて角度を修正したり、ショックを強く叩いたり、ショックを締め付けてる部品のスウィングを弱く叩いたりしますが、どうしてもダメです。
この日はこれで日没となり、これ以上頑張って抜くことはできたとしても、新しいショックを入れることはできないと判断し、一旦自力での作業は諦めて外注することに。
車修理に使える時間は限られており、年末に向けまだ他にたくさんやるべきことが残っています。
コイル交換でお世話になったセイロモータースに問い合わせしましたが、この週末は空きがなく、年末年始も私の休みより長く、単身先から帰ってこれるタイミングと合わせると最短で1月15日です。
んん～、きっとそんなにこのまま走り続けられません。タイヤハウス内のオイルの噴出跡を見ると、既にショック内にオイルはほぼ残ってないはず。
左右のショックはスタビライザーで連結されてるので、左側のショックには単純に考えると倍の負荷がかかってるはずです。
そして、これからの雪道のガタガタがさらなる追い打ちになるはず。
ショックが抜けないことに対してこれまでに足りてないのは何なのか、スウィングをもっと下に押す力をかける方法を考えました。
単管とストラットアームを針金ハンガーで連結し、ストラットアームの根元を木材を介して支点としてグイグイやってみようかと。
下にグイグイ力をかけながら、ショックをガンガン叩くと、成功！やっとで抜けました～。
これでストラット上端のサポートベアリングの皿が、ボンネット内部の13㎜のナット3本で吊られてるだけになりましたが、ショック下端を完全に抜くにはもう少しスウィングを下げる必要があります。
さらにスウィングを下げる前に、あまり余裕のなさそうなライン、
ABS信号の線を車体側に留めてるカ所と、
ブレーキホースを車体側に留めてるカ所を外して、自由長を長くしておきます。
そしてスウィングをショック下端が抜けるギリギリまで下げてショックを抜きます。
このとき、各ブーツ類やブッシュにできるだけ無理な力が加わらないように、スウィング下のパンダジャッキを操作しながら最小限に下げた方がいいと思います。
そして、ショック下端が外れるとスウィングが外側に倒れてきて、ドライブシャフトブーツに引っ張り力がかかるので、適当なもので支えた方がいいでしょう。
あとはショック上端のサポートベアリングの皿をボンネット内で緩く留めている13㎜のナット3本を外せばストラット一式を取り出せます。
スプリングを圧縮して、旧ショックから新ショックに部品を付け替えます。
オイルまみれになってるのでブレーキクリーナーで油を落としながらです。
ゴムやプラスチックの部品が多数ありましたが、まだそんなに傷んでる感じではありませんでした。
ただし、今後何年持つのかはわかりませんので、注視しつつ必要に応じ暇を見て交換していきます。
サポートベアリングのグリースがカペカペになってたので、その部分は剥がして新しいグリースを追加しておきました。
車体の方もブレーキクリーナーを大量に吹き付け、漏れたオイルをクリーニングしておきます。
特にゴムブッシュ周りやブーツ類は念入りにやしました。
足回りの部品は少しくらいの油汚れは大丈夫かと思いますが、油まみれでは劣化が早まるのではないかと。
さて、新たなショックでストラットを組み上げて、元の場所に付けようとしますが、ここでも手こずりました。
グリスを付けたり、パンダジャッキを何度も上下させて角度を微修正しながらショック下端を入れようとしますが、なかなか入りません。
半分くらいまでは入りますが、僅かに斜めになっただけで噛んで、それ以上ビクともしません。
ここでもやっぱり力を加えるしかないかということで、下からパンダジャッキでグイグイ押し上げながらスウィングを叩くと、あるところでガスッ、やった！入りました。
あとは元どおり、ショックを締め付けたり、ブレーキホースを固定したり、ABSの線を固定したら完了です。
上の皿のナット3か所を仮止め後、ウマから降ろし1Gがかかった状態で本締めしようとしたところ、ここでミス発覚。
このとき気づきましたが、上の皿の位置を間違えてました。
本来、皿に付いてるポッチを上の写真黄矢印に合わせる必要がありますが、気づいてませんでした。さらにポッチが取れてただの穴になってます。
ここで再びジャッキアップ、上の皿の位置合わせでさらに時間がかかってしまいました。
この上の皿の3か所のナットは再使用すると緩み止めが効かなくなるので、今回は緩み止めを塗布した別のナットを、元のナットの上から締め付けました。
これでもまあ緩むことはないでしょう。
最後に元どおり付けられなかった部品です。
上の皿とボディーの間に挟まって馴染みをよくするリング状の部品。
これは元どおりに入れられなかったので、金属どうしが直接触れている状態で、もしかするとギシギシ音鳴りがするかも知れません。
あとは上の皿のポッチが取れたものが転がってました。
もっと丁寧に作業したら無事たっだかも知れませんが、必死過ぎてここまで配慮できず。
右側だけでかなり時間を使ったせいで時間切れとなり、左側のショックは来春温かくなってから交換することにしました。
まだ年末に向けて他にたくさんやることがあります。
この翌日に行ったスタッドレスタイヤ組み換えは別の記事で報告しています。
片側のみのショック交換でタイヤを付けて試走してみましたが、心配した左右のアンバランスも感じられず、特にこれまでと変わった印象もありません。
この冬はガッタガタの雪道はゆっくり走ろうと思います。
寿命が間近であろう左前のショックからいつオイルが噴くかわからないので。
無事に春を迎えたら、左前のショックと後輪も交換の予定です。
（2022/05/15 左前ショック交換を追記しました）
昨年12月、右前ショック交換後降雪期に入り、左前の寿命も時間の問題かと一冬ビクビクしながら乗ってましたが、幸い厳寒期にオイル漏れという最悪の事態は免れ、無事春を迎えることができました。
5月連休に左前も交換しました。
まず、赤矢印のストラットタワーバーを外してずらす必要があります。
つまり、またまた、エンジン奥側を覆ってる黄矢印の部品一式を外す必要があります。
毎度毎度ですが、これ本当にいちいち面倒です。まったく何とかしてほしいものです。
今回の作業とは関係ありませんが、オイルレベルゲージがないのも、この車の本当に不便なところです。
これが外した部品一式です。
邪魔なものを外したエンジンルームです。
ストラットタワーバーのストラット側のE14のボルトを外し、フロントガラス下中央の根元側のキャップを外しE18のネジを緩め、ストラットタワーバーを少しずらします。
右前には付いてなかった、スイッチなのかセンサーなのか、ロアアームと連結されて何かを感知してるようです。
何の役割を果たすものか分かりませんが、この部品のアームの可動範囲がわからないので一応リンクを外します。
スウィングを下げるにあたり、余裕のないラインの支持を外します。ABSセンサーと、右側にはなかったブレーキパッド摩耗センサーです。
こちらも同様、ABSセンサーとブレーキパッド摩耗センサーです。
写真には写ってませんが、ブレーキホースの支持も外します。
これで各ラインに余裕ができ、安心してスウィングを下げられます。
ただ、この後、ショックが外れるまでスウィングを下げると、ドライブシャフトブーツがほぼ伸び切りとなるので、できるだけ気を使いながら作業を進めます。
ショック下端を締めているボルトは、右側では抜こうとしてかなり努力したものの結局断念、左側もやはり抜けず早々に諦めて作業続行です。
右側同様に自作スプレッダーでショック下端の掴みを緩め、パンダジャッキで上げたり下げたり、叩いたり、単管でストラットアームを押し下げたりして、何とか抜くことができました。
今回はさらに、ディスクやキャリパーを手でがっちり掴んで、体重をかけてガシガシ揺さぶったりなど、いろんなやり方で振動を加え、右側よりも早く抜くことができました。
ショックアブソーバー本体以外の部品はそのまま移植して使います。
ショックを入れるときも、ガシガシ揺さぶったり叩いたりで、スウィングにショック下端を嵌めていきます。
今回も、ショック上皿のナットは再使用、プラス二重ナット、念のため緩み止め塗布としました。
これで何とか無事、左右ともにフロントショック交換を終えることができました。
左側を交換してから数百キロ走行、特に直進性など問題ありませんが、タイヤの片減りなどにも注視していきます。
